If you have frizzy hair, you know just what a hassle it can be. Growing up with curly hair, I’ve experienced a lot of frizz in my life. At my grade 8 graduation, frizz was there; at all my dance competitions, frizz was there too, oh and don’t forget first dates and special events. Frizzy hair can be a pain, but luckily there are ways to tame it with awesome products and gorgeous hairstyles for frizzy hair!

What Causes Frizzy Hair?

Frizz is caused by a lack of moisture in the hair. When your hair doesn’t have enough moisture, the cuticle opens up and it looks for moisture from the air. When it’s humid outside, the outside moisture causes your strands to swell and become dry and frizzy, which is why humidity seems like your hair’s worst enemy. Curly hair is also more prone to frizz than straight hair is since it becomes dry and dehydrated more easily. There a number of reasons why hair becomes dehydrated, from using the wrong shampoo, to not drinking enough water, to having over-processed chemicals in your hair.

6 Tips to Prevent and Control Frizz

1. Keep Styling Tools to a Minimum
If you use a hair dryer or straightening or curling iron every day, you’re much more likely to experience the dry hair and the frizz that comes with it. Try to keep hair styling tools to a minimum. When you do use your styling tools, bring the temperature down to 365 degrees fahrenheit, as the hotter they are, the more your hair cuticles will swell.

2. Don’t Brush Dry Hair
I learned quickly that the only time I should brush my hair is when it’s wet. Brushing my dry hair has always been a recipe for frizz. Instead, towel-dry your hair lightly, then rub a large-toothed comb or your fingers through it. You can then add your favourite frizz taming product (Pssssst! We love It’s a 10 Miracle Styling Lotion!).

3. Wash Your Hair Less Often
Some people think that the more you wash your hair, the healthier it will be, but that’s just not the case. If you wash your hair every day, you’re stripping the natural oils out of your hair, making it extremely dry. Stick to washing your hair with shampoo every third day. If you have really oily hair, you can use dry shampoo to stretch the time between washes.

4. Deep Condition Your Hair
You should be using a conditioner like It’s a 10 Miracle Deep Conditioner Plus Keratin every time you wash your hair, in fact, more often. Apply conditioner to your hair every two days, whether you’re washing your hair or not. Apply it from the midshaft down to your ends, and make sure to leave it on for at least 5 minutes to let it sink in. This will help bring moisture to your strands, and decrease frizz!

5. Only Use Alcohol-Free Products
Did you know that a lot of hair sprays and mousses have a high alcohol content? Using products with alcohol can cause your hair cuticle to swell up, increasing frizziness. Check out our list of the best alcohol-free products to fight frizz below!

6. Use a Hydrating Hair Mask Once a Week
One of the best frizzy hair solutions is to find a hydrating hair mask (ArtNaturals Argan Oil Hair Mask is a great one!) that works for your hair and use it on your strands once a week. This will help fill any holes in your hair shaft that let outside moisture in and contribute to frizz. Do a hair mask once a week, especially in the colder months when hair often becomes more brittle.
